Office of Assessment

Grade Assessment for Reinstated Students

Reinstated students are held accountable to all previously earned grades and they remain part of the permanent student record. If, upon returning, a student is required to retake a previously failed course/section, the retake will replace the entire remediation process for that course/section and will supersede the remediation process described for academic failures of continuously matriculated students. If the returning student fails the course/section a second time, the consequences will be identical to those described for failing the remediation process for a continuously matriculated student.

Missed/Make-Up Exams

Students must have an approved, valid excused absence in order to make-up an exam. In such cases, Testing Services, in conjunction with the Course Director, will schedule a make-up assessment. Once scheduled, the student is expected to arrive on time for the make-up. Testing Services will communicate the confirmed date, time, and location to the student via email. These examinations may occur outside of normal instructional hours, including evenings or weekends.

Review of Examinations

Students who wish to review past exams must request permission from the Office of Assessment and Outcomes. Exam reviews only apply to in-house, faculty written exams. NBOME, COMAT, COMSAE, NBME CAS, and other outside exams are not reviewable per the writing owner of the exam. Exams will be reviewed under the following procedures and rules:

  1. Students are not permitted to have any electronic devices, book bags, purses, etc., in the same room while the exam is being reviewed.
  2. Exams can only be reviewed in the presence of a learning specialist and/or member of the Assessment and Outcomes staff.
  3. Test reviews can only occur within ten business days after the final test results have been released and are limited to a single review.  Multiple reviews of the same exam are not allowed.
  4. Test reviews are limited to no more than thirty minutes in duration.
  5. Only missed questions will be available for review.  Questions that were answered correctly will not be made available for review.
  6. Test reviews may be video recorded for test security purposes.

Failure to follow these guidelines will result in a zero (0) score for that exam.

Standards of Behavior in Exams: Testing Policy

Students who are authorized for accommodations will report to the Office of Assessment for testing. Accommodation conditions, as appropriate, may include alteration to the length of the exam time, testing location, (room number), or other accommodations. Students in need of academic-related accommodations for testing are encouraged to contact the Office of Student Affairs for an application and instructions.

Any student arriving late for an exam will not be permitted to enter the testing environment and begin the exam. Students who arrive late will be given a one-time warning and allowed to take the test at a time determined by Testing Services, with documentation filed in Guardian of the late arrival. Should a student arrive late for an exam again without documentation or an excused reason, that student will receive a zero (0) for the exam. All quizzes and exams will start and end on time. Students are not permitted to leave the room until 15 minutes have elapsed from the scheduled start of a written exam. A student with an unexcused absence will not be permitted to complete the exam unless authorized by a course director, the Office of the Dean, or Office of Student Affairs administrator. Students not authorized to make up the exam will receive a zero on the examination. To receive authorization to make up an exam, students must provide acceptable written documentation to the Office of Assessment. Additional details on this subject can be found in the Attendance Policy.

While taking exams, students should have in their possession only items that are necessary for the exam (i.e., a laptop, mouse, foam ear-plugs checked by the proctor, and a marker for dry-erase board). No food or drink is allowed during testing unless approved. All purses, backpacks, iPods/smartphones/smart watches, hats, sunglasses, unnecessary clothing items, pagers, headphones, CD players, calculators, cell/mobile phones, mobile devices, etc. must be left outside the testing area. Recording or communication devices of any type are not allowed at any time in the testing environment, including Meta or AI glasses. Academic integrity, honesty, and personal conduct guidelines will be strictly enforced.

Any student found in possession of any type of electronic device capable of accessing the internet in any testing environment (device used for actual testing is the sole exception) will be awarded an automatic failure of the exam in question. KHSU-KansasCOM is unable to ascertain intent behind possession of any electronic device in a testing situation, and any student found in possession will be considered to have violated the KHSU-KansasCOM Academic Integrity Policy.

All students are required to have privacy screens on their laptops during exams.

Students will be referred to the Office of Student Affairs for breach of the code of professional conduct.
